Little Bear Hat - Newborn - Free Pattern

FREE PATTERN -- Please follow this blog!

After several failed attempts to make a newborn bear hat from the patterns I found online I made my own. Attempted that is! I have never actually written down a pattern before, so bear with me! No pun intended ;)

Materials:
Small amount of bulky yarn  (lion brand - homespun - white) I have made this with many different colors since!
J (6mm) Hook
Knitting Needle

Abbreviations:
sl st - slip stitch
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet

Instructions:

Make a magic circle, ch 4
Round 1: 11 dc in 4th ch from hook (12dc). Join with sl st in top of beg ch 4.
Round 2: ch 3, dc in same sp, 2 dc in each dc around (24dc). Join with sl st in top of ch 3.
Round 3: ch 3, dc in same sp *dc in next 2 dc, 2dc in next dc* around. (36dc) Join with sl st in top of ch 3.
Round 4-6: ch 3, dc in same sp *dc in ea dc* around. (36dc) Join with sl st in top of ch 3.
Round 7: dc in ea dc around. sl st to join.

Fasten Off. Weave in all ends.

Let's talk ears for a minute. When I first started I asked the expert (my husbands grandmother) to help me attach the ears I made. She assured me the ears I had made wouldn't stay standing up for long. We went ahead and sewed them on and they did just fine. After a few months of my daughter wearing the hat they are starting to droop. This might be normal wear but she sugguested I not make the ear a complete circle and it would wear much better. I took her advice and to no surprise she was right! It also makes it much easier to sew on.

Ears: (Make 2)
make a magic circle, ch 1
Round 1: 6 sc in circle, ch 1, turn
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc (12sc)

Fasten off. Leave tail long enough for sewing.

Ties: (Make 2)
Cut 3 strands of yarn approximately 36 inches long.
Slip through space between dc where appropriate. Ch 13. Fasten off and trim. You can make them as long or short as you would like.

Assembly:
Sew on ears between rounds 3 and 4!

As you can see from the photo I attached a flower clip. You could also add a big pink or blue bow. This little hat is perfect for newborn pictures, and is the reason I actually made it. As soon as I get permission from the photographer I will share her photo with you!

Please don't hesitate to correct me if anything doesn't work up right. I tend to lose count when my 8 month old is tugging at my pant leg wanting mommy to play!

  7. Hi. LOVE this hat and have made several so far. But am having trouble figuring out the directions for the tails. Once I have the 3 36" pieces of yarn through the double crochet space, do I tie them off?? Crochet each strand individually? Crochet all three together in single crochet??
Thanks for any guidance you can provide!
